Minwei Biotech Receives Australian Ethics Approval for Phase 1 Study of MWX205, a Dual-Target PCSK9/ANGPTL3 siRNA Candidate

An investigational RNAi approach designed to address complementary pathways in lipid metabolism.

Shanghai Minwei Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (“Minwei Biotech”), a subsidiary of Lepu Medical, has received approval from an Australian Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) for a Phase 1 clinical study of MWX205, its internally developed small interfering RNA (siRNA) candidate targeting both PCSK9 and ANGPTL3.The approval marks an important milestone in the development of MWX205 and Minwei Biotech’s multi-target RNAi portfolio for cardiometabolic diseases.

Two Complementary Targets in One Therapeutic Approach

MWX205 is designed to suppress PCSK9 and ANGPTL3, combining two complementary approaches to lipid regulation. Its development strategy aims to address both LDL cholesterol and triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, with potential relevance to mixed dyslipidemia. This dual-target design provides a rationale for investigating broader lipid management through a single therapeutic candidate. Its safety, lipid-lowering effects and duration of activity in humans remain to be established in clinical studies.

Preclinical Findings Support Clinical Evaluation

MWX205 reduced both target protein levels in rhesus monkeys with spontaneous dyslipidemia, with suppression maintained through the 12-week study endpoint. Maximum reductions in LDL cholesterol and triglycerides were approximately 74% and 82%, respectively. These findings provide a preclinical rationale for further development.

Advancing Cardiometabolic Innovation

MWX205 reflects Minwei Biotech’s focus on multi-target drug discovery and the development of differentiated approaches to cardiometabolic disease. The company welcomes discussions with potential international partners interested in the development and commercialization of innovative RNAi therapeutics.
