Development of Global Point-of-care Testing (POCT)

Development of Global Point-of-care Testing (POCT)

According to Canadian certification, point-of-care testing (POCT) is "any test performed outside the laboratory, in a hospital, clinic, or by a healthcare organization that provides outpatient care".

1. Types and applications of POCT equipment

POCT devices are divided into two types according to their size that is, handheld and desktop. With the revolution in the healthcare industry, equipment has also been synchronized. It provides quick results, helps doctors make clinical decisions, and is convenient for patients and caregivers.

POCT equipment is subdivided according to the system as follows: blood gas system, heart, diabetes, urinalysis and informatics. The blood gas system quickly provides test data and poct diagnostics with minimal operator interaction.

The main application areas of POCT products: self-monitoring; community testing in pharmacies; general practices; and emergency departments.

In hospitals, clinics, diagnostic laboratories, and home care environments, POCT devices are used for instant detection results, so that early treatment decisions can be made faster. Laboratories, as well as operating rooms, emergency rooms, ICUs, intensive care units, and other hospital testing sites all need results from critically ill patients.

In hospitals, POCT medical treatment is used for inpatient (operating room, intensive care unit, emergency department, etc.) and outpatient (medical practice, home visits, etc.). And glucose monitoring and anticoagulant monitoring are usually used in the category of patient self-monitoring.

With increasing investment in research and development of POCT diagnostic equipment, point-of-care testing (POCT) equipment technology is emerging.

2. Development of the global POCT equipment market

The global point-of-care (POCT) equipment market is mainly driven by advances in diagnostic equipment technology. In addition, the increase in the number of diagnostic laboratories in developing countries has driven the demand for point-of-care testing (POCT) equipment.

In 2016, North America had the largest point-of-care (POCT) equipment market with a revenue share of 35% followed by Europe.

However, the Asia-Pacific region is the emerging market with the highest compound annual growth rate during the forecast period, that is, 2016-2024, due to a variety of factors, such as major players' initiatives to expand their distribution network, healthcare innovation and to increase number of patients and POCT equipment suppliers. The number of joint ventures between them is responsible for the growth of the Asia-Pacific real-time equipment market. The market is believed to expand with mounting opportunities.
